If you would like to include texts in your syllabus that aren’t already in the existing OpenMods repository, you can add your own texts by starting with Step 1, below. If all the texts you want to use are already available through OpenMods, you can create a coursepack directly at Step 2. If you would like to take an existing coursepack and modify it for your own purposes, you can start with Step 3.

Step 1. Add New Items to the Library

  1. Log In to the site (if you have not yet done so, you will have to register for an account)
  2. Click on “Add New Item”
  3. Fill out as much of the metadata as possible. Please note that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR VERIFYING THAT THE ITEM IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN (in Canada)
  4. Select the file you want to upload (this should ideally be a PDF that you have created from an out-of-copyright source or that you have downloaded and of which you can assert confidently that it was made from an out-of-copyright source).
  5. Click “Upload”.
  6. Click Ingest Digital Asset.

When you see this:

You have added to the Library -- Congratulations! Now you can create a coursepack using items that you and/or others have added to the Library.

Step 2. Create a new Course pack or Anthology

(to modify an existing Coursepack, whether your own or someone else’s, see “Clone and Modify an Existing Coursepack,” below):

  1. Log In to the site (if you have not yet done so, you will have to register for an account)
  2. Select “Create New Coursepack” from the home screen.
  3. Enter the data for the course or use to which you will put the anthology (all fields are optional, but the more you fill in the more discoverable your anthology will be)
    1. note that at this point you can upload a course description, syllabus, Table of Contents (TOC), or additional materials
    2. Click “Create Coursepack” at the bottom of the screen
  4. Click on “Add items to Coursepack”
  5. Browse, sort, search, and select the items you want to include in your coursepack and check the box for each one you want to include.
    1. click “Add selected results”
  6. Click on the “Details” tab to see the metadata you entered for this coursepack and to view the contents.
  7. To rearrange or delete items from the Coursepack, click on “Rearrange or delete items”.
    1. Depending on what you want to do, select either “Remove Items from your Coursepack” or “Reorder”
    2. to Remove items, click the triangle to expand this option, then check the box beside the item(s) you want to remove and click “Save” at the bottom of the screen
    3. to Reorder items, click the triangle to expand this option, then drag the items into the order you would like and click “Save Changes” and then “Save” at the bottom of the page
    4. Wait Patiently
    5. Click on the “View” tab to return to the overview of your coursepack (*click on “Details” to see the metadata and TOC)
  8. When you are happy with your Coursepack, click on “Download coursepack material” to download your material. It will come as a .ZIP folder, which, when expanded, will become a file folder with your items numbered and in the order in which you have them in your coursepack on the site.

Step 3. Clone and Modify an Existing Coursepack

  1. Log In to the site (if you have not yet done so, you will have to register for an account
  2. From the home page, select “Browse Coursepacks”
  3. Browse the Coursepacks
  4. When you’ve found the one you want to modify, click on it.
  5. Click on “Duplicate and modify this coursepack”
  6. Edit the title to reflect your use/interest and click on “Duplicate Coursepack”
  7. Edit the metadata to be attached to your version of the coursepack, upload and description, syllabus, TOC, etc. you want to include, and click on “Update course details”
  8. Click on the “Details” tab to see the metadata you entered for this coursepack and to view the contents.
  1. To Add Items to the Coursepack
    1. Click on the “Details” tab to see the metadata you entered for this coursepack and to view the contents.
    2. Browse, sort, search, and select the items you want to include in your coursepack and check the box for each one you want to include.
      1. click “Add selected results”
    3. Click on “Add Items to the Coursepack"
